Go Light or Go Back home Key West Style with Team Salt Rock!

I got back to my car on Thursday and started checking my voice mails. Cody said call me when you get this. He was like what are doing for couple days.  You wanna go down to the Key's for a couple days. With out question I was ready to  rock.  Ran back cleaned up my dads boat packed the bags met up and was ready rock! We had to wait on a couple people.  We got up on the bright and started the voyage down there.  We ran out of Gas in Venice on the side of the road on the Interstate Luckily The Florida Highway Patrol drove Key to the Gas Station because Triple A does not carry diesel.  We made a couple stops for gas and one at the world wide sportsman and a couple other tackle shops. It takes forever getting down Key West towing a boat. We Finally got to the house in Key Haven around 7-8 ish.  We all showered and I called my Buddy Ben that is a Captain on the Tail Walker a 42 Express Cabo.  Funny he was still in the same slip and there were a couple people on the dock (A & marina that were there when I was down in May and March.  Hung out with him for a little bit caught up on old times and he just got settled in the Saturday before.  He gave us the low down on what he has been hearing around town..

Saturday we cleaned up the boat and got everything ready to rock did errands around town and got the boat in the water and were able to start  fishing around 12 ish.  Jiggled up some nice Magnum threads and runners and 1 goggle eye during the day....kinda weird!  Got some nice rock hinds couple 4-5 foot cudas.  I was jiggling up speedos like crazy...  We found some birds going nuts and got some nice tuna I got one like 16 Lbs and then Cody got one on the Butterfly combo.  Photobucket
Photobucket Ran back up in front of the frigates getting down.  Kyle Fought something that hit the speedo on the down rigger that we were hoping to be a wahoo and it ended up being a big ole Cuda.  Then I got a nice tuna that took 45 minutes to land. The Thing would not quit we even had to chase it to gain line a few times!  Then Cody hooks up with something good on the butterfly combo.   Then a mysterious big fish chomps it turned out to be like a big 8 foot shark that he whooped quick.  Little crazy with my nice Tuna almost down and both of us right next to each other doing the tango on the front of the boat.  Kyle Put a nice Gaff job in the Tuna and got her in the boat.   Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

My Biggest Tuna so far!

We Tryed some deep dropping in the deep water with the the speedos and tide was ripping way to quick and couldn't get it money on the rock.  We made run back in the dark which can be a little dicey going under that one bridge in key haven because it is so shallow.

The Next day we were able to get it done a ton easier.  Threadies were nearly impossible to get  it got ruff-er and the water got dirty. We were able to come up with a solid amount or big runners.  On the edge of the reef the ballyhoo's were crazy thick we chummed then in  and had them juiced but the air rats would scare them before they could get close to get them with the cast net. We were able to get 1...  We got some nice yellow tails and a mutton. Got super frustrated with the hoos.  We made the run out the reef like 40-50 miles. Then after pretty much no time at all. Something Hit the runner just kinda sat on it like a log.  Cody played it calling it to be a daddy dog king.  I let Kyle do the gaff job and the moose was flopped in the boat. Around 45-50Lbs last pic makes it looks the biggest for sure..
The we seen a nasty show anchored on it started wrecking the yellow tail then the shut down Kyle threw down a big yellow tail and got a nice Carbo. Then Got a few more nice grouper.  Checked around the area found a nasty show.  I seen a grouper in 50 feet of water come up and smoke my bait and the drag screaming began after a 5 minute battle he finally found a hole.  I was being a KOOK and taking it a little to easy and talking to Kyle and Cody.  So I threw the rod in the rod holder the rod in the holder flipped the bail and went back to fishing with another rod.  Came Back to it pumped and finessed her out.  A Nice fat red grouper on the 3000 Stella with 10 Lb Braid with a 20  Lb Leader.  Around 15 Lbs or so... Then It was on we all started fishing with the light rods like that and it was intense! Photobucket Photobucket We were catching all sorts of crazy grouper now. Photobucket The top one is a Yellowfin grouper the middle one is a rock hind and the bottom one is a comb grouper!
Pretty little fellas!

They were liking the Buck tail the best for sure and of course we didn't have as many.  We lost the good ones we had!
Sun going down and we had a solid 45 Nat miles in solid  6 footers. We made what we called as our last stop which was pretty much out of control.  Every bait in the water was a big mango, big yellow tail, rock hind, red grouper, and one scamp that was like 12 lbs.  It was on fire!  We were wrecking them we had to leave it was getting late and we didn't want everyone back at the house getting worried.  It was a interesting ride back pitch black with large waves.  Cody can run that boat like a champ! He is the man that is all I got to say!

We woke up in the morning and started gutting the fish! Photobucket

New years day we got a later start we had their little brother Carson and their buddy Cole.  We went out the Canal and headed over to their buddy Steven's to Grab a pin fish trap. To our luck we stumbled on the wad of whitties in 2 throws we blacked out both wells and filled up a 5 gallon for chummers.  We ran out finally got em on big Bonita on the light gear with the stellas and stradic's. With 5 people bowed up it was pretty hectic Seen the biggest Bull Dolphin I have ever seen trailing a pod of Porpoises. We went in shallow and got some nice mutton's carbos and yellow tails and such and called it an early day.  Everyone had plans for new years. Kyle and I walked over to his buddy Steve's house that was on the water the sickest house I have ever seen in the Key for sure.  I walked out on the dock and they had an underwater light and right in the light is a Jew fish like 5 foot long and 4 or 5  real size tarpon around 100 or betters.  They came back from their diving trip for the day in their Intrepid and They had a couple nice mutton's and hogfish. They invited a bunch of people over and Frank cooked it up awesome.  The first time I have every ate a snapper whole like that it was so good!! We hit up the town for the New Years put it this way they had the whole Duval Street closed off and you didn't have about an inch to spare..
We Had a blast.  Next day Kyle and I just took it light just enjoyed the food that around town with some of his friends.  We were wondering if we were going to stay and Frank located a plane so We packed up our bags and got to ride in a private plane back with Kyle, his mom, Carson, His buddy Steve his girlfriend Amber and a bucs cheerleader with her little dog and myself.  A little bumpy ride at certain times.  Made it back and it was deffinently colder back here then down there but not as windy thats for sure!

I was gonna stay because my buddy Ben wants me to work with him on his Cabo.  Got out for a few days at a time kinda deals.   I will Be back! Very soon!
Funny story I get back to the Chivas house and don't have my keys so we went back to my house to get my spare. Of course my spare doesn't work because it doesn't have the chip in it.  So Kyle said you can drive the scooter back to your house till we find your keys so I threw on a couple jackets and pants and a beanie and maybe the drive from Bellair to my house on Mad beach on the coldest day of the year.  I got to my house and honked the horn and my crabby opened the door And I said "I can get sixty miles to the gallon on the hog" He fell to the ground dying laughing.  I invited over a couple people and hand some fresh Tuna and Kyle came back by and grabbed the scooter that was in my house because it was not a cheap scooter!
Anyways Happy New Year Everyone!!!
