Spook In the hand almost Ruined the Day!
Today I had the opportunity to take a nice guy John Fussell kayak fishing for his first time. We Started first thing the morning with a nice low tide and the wind pushing the water out. We paddled back to the zone and started off getting some nice trout and and a couple lady fish. I was working the spook with the tide and caught a small snook. The next cast a nice trout and just right next to the boat he leaped and got the brand new hooks I put on the night before in my hand. Bummed out I told John what had happened. I cut the Line and John helped me out with getting the trout back in the water. Got the hook off the the spook at least now. There was no way we were cutting the hook with the pliers. John was ready to head back and we could just reschedule but there was no way i was going to throw in the towel especially with the ideal conditions. So we kept moving where I was hoping there was going to be a bunch of snook I ended up with a 24 incher that wasn't right. So we check out a canal and luckily there was a guy working on a house. He asked if we had caught any fish I told a couple trout and snook and I asked if he had any cutter to cut a hook and first thing he said " You get a hook in your hand" . Anyways we lucked out he had a pair of dikes and was able to cut it and it came right out. His wife was there and she was a nurse and bandaged me up and we were on out way. We hooked a nice slot size snook just after that shook the hook out next to the boat. We got out and waded some pot holes a John picked up a couple trout and a snook. I got a little red and a trout. With the tide rushing in quick I decided to head to another spot on the way there we picked up a couple nice trout. John was soon hooked up with a big red after a good fight he got a nice 26 1/2 incher. We decided to get out and wade and hooked about a dozen smaller snook between the two of us and caught a few smaller reds. We started heading back and John picked up another lower slot red. Turned out to be a good especially after a ruff beginning. The lure of choice today was the Golden Bream CAL with a 1/4 ounce head working it trough the pot holes.
